Preview: Maryland at Northwestern in Big Ten Men’s Basketball EVANSTON, Ill. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking to halt extended slides will meet Wednesday when the Maryland Terrapins visit the Northwestern Wildcats in a Big Ten Conference men’s basketball game at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Both squads enter with losing records and aim to build momentum in the final weeks of the regular season. Maryland (9-15 overall) has lost three of its last four, most recently falling 68-57 at Rutgers on Sunday. Northwestern (10-16) has dropped five consecutive games, including a 68-49 loss at Nebraska on Saturday. The matchup features a key battle in the frontcourt, where Maryland’s Solomon Washington has been a consistent bright spot. The forward is coming off a 37-minute, 11-point, 14-rebound performance against Rutgers and has averaged nearly a double-double over his last several contests. His activity on the glass will be critical for the Terrapins. Northwestern will counter with guard Angelo Ciaravino, who scored nine points against Nebraska. His production has varied, but he erupted for 20 points in a win over Penn State on Jan. 29, demonstrating his scoring potential. Maryland’s recent wins have been anchored by defense, holding Iowa to 70 points and Minnesota to 62 in victories earlier this month. Northwestern has struggled offensively during its skid, failing to reach 70 points in four of the five losses. The Wildcats won the season’s first meeting, defeating Maryland 94-73 in Evanston on Jan. 29 behind Ciaravino’s 20-point outing. The Terrapins will look for a split in the season series. Wednesday’s game is scheduled for a 9 p.m. EST tipoff and will be televised on the Big Ten Network. Following this contest, Maryland will host Washington on Saturday, while Northwestern travels to Indiana next Tuesday.
