MILWAUKEE (Interstat) â A surging Saint Johnâs squad riding a nine-game winning streak will look to continue its march toward the postseason when it visits a struggling Marquette team on Wednesday night at the Bradley Center. The Red Storm (20-5, 11-3 Big East) have not lost since a Jan. 13 meeting with these same Golden Eagles, a stretch of dominance that has solidified their standing as a potential high seed in the NCAA tournament. Marquette (9-17, 4-10), meanwhile, has lost three of its last four and sits near the bottom of the conference. Saint Johnâs is powered by forward Dylan Darling, who is coming off a career-high 23 points and eight rebounds in a 79-69 road win at Providence on Saturday. Over his last eight games, Darling is averaging 11.8 points and 4.5 rebounds, providing a consistent interior presence for the balanced Red Storm. The Golden Eagles will counter with dynamic guard Nigel James, who is in the midst of a spectacular individual season despite his teamâs record. James is averaging 18.2 points and 6.5 assists per game in conference play. He erupted for 30 points and 12 assists in Marquetteâs 96-88 loss at Xavier on Saturday, showcasing his ability to single-handedly keep his team competitive. In the first meeting this season on Jan. 13 in New York, Saint Johnâs dominated Marquette 92-68. The Red Storm shot 54% from the field and forced 15 turnovers, holding James to 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting. For Marquette to reverse that result, it will need a strong defensive effort to slow Saint Johnâs efficient offense and more scoring support for James. The Golden Eagles have shown flashes, including an 86-62 rout of Creighton on Jan. 27, but have struggled with consistency. Saint Johnâs, which has won its last five road games, can ill afford a letdown against a sub-.500 opponent as it jockeys for position in a tight Big East race. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST.
