WORCESTER, Mass. (Interstat) — Two men’s basketball teams seeking momentum for the Patriot League stretch run will meet Wednesday when Holy Cross hosts Lafayette at the Hart Recreation Center. The Crusaders (9-18) and Leopards (8-18) enter with nearly identical records and recent struggles. Holy Cross has lost four of its last five, while Lafayette has dropped three of its last four. Both teams are looking to avenge recent defeats, with the Leopards coming off a 78-69 home loss to Lehigh on Saturday and the Crusaders falling 83-73 at Loyola Maryland on Sunday. The matchup features two of the conference’s top offensive talents. Lafayette guard Caleb Williams is averaging 18.1 points per game in league play and is coming off a 26-point, 6-assist performance against Lehigh. He scored 28 points in a win over Bucknell on Jan. 28. For Holy Cross, forward Gabe Warren provides a consistent inside presence, fresh from a 28-point, 9-rebound effort at Loyola Maryland. Warren is averaging 15.2 points and 5.8 rebounds in Patriot League action. Lafayette won the first meeting this season decisively, 74-55, at home on Jan. 17. Williams led the Leopards with 19 points in that contest, while Holy Cross was held to 32.8% shooting. The game could hinge on which team controls the tempo. Lafayette, led by Williams’ playmaking, will look to push in transition, while Holy Cross will aim to establish Warren in the post and improve upon its recent defensive performances. Both teams are fighting to improve their seeding for the upcoming Patriot League tournament, making this a critical late-season contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
