SAN ANTONIO (Interstat) — The Florida Atlantic Owls look to halt a five-game skid when they visit the struggling Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners in an American Athletic Conference men’s basketball matchup Wednesday night. The Owls (14-12, 4-9 AAC) arrive at the Convocation Center reeling from a series of narrow defeats, including an 83-81 overtime loss to South Florida on Sunday. Despite the losing streak, FAU dominated the first meeting this season, routing UTSA 110-70 on Dec. 31. Florida Atlantic will lean on forward Devin Williams, who is coming off a strong all-around performance with 15 points, seven rebounds and five blocks in 39 minutes against USF. His defensive presence will be key against a UTSA squad that just posted a season-high in points. The Roadrunners (5-20, 3-10) are buoyed by one of their best wins of the season, an 88-79 victory at Charlotte on Sunday. Guard Jamir Simpson powered that effort with 20 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, continuing his run as UTSA’s most consistent offensive threat. Simpson has scored in double figures in seven consecutive games. While UTSA’s record is among the nation’s worst, their recent offensive uptick, averaging 80 points over their last three games, presents a challenge for an FAU team that has struggled to close out contests. The Owls’ last five losses have come by an average of just 5.2 points. The matchup pits FAU’s need to rediscover its winning form against UTSA’s attempt to build momentum off a rare conference road win. For the Owls, maintaining focus against a team they handled easily earlier will be crucial as they aim to stay above .500 overall. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST Wednesday at the Convocation Center (UTSA).
