Preview: Virginia Tech at Miami (Fla.) in ACC Men’s Basketball CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Interstat) — A surging Miami squad looks to continue its push atop the Atlantic Coast Conference standings when it hosts a Virginia Tech team seeking a resume-building road win on Tuesday night at the Watsco Center. The No. 10-ranked Hurricanes (20-5, 11-3 ACC) have won seven of their last eight games, including a dramatic 77-76 victory at North Carolina State on Saturday. Forward Malik Reneau, a focal point for Miami, is playing at an elite level, averaging 22.1 points over his last seven contests. He poured in 26 points and grabbed six rebounds in the win over the Wolfpack. Virginia Tech (17-9, 8-6) arrives looking to rebound from a disappointing 92-69 home loss to Florida State. The Hokies have struggled for consistency in conference play, alternating wins and losses over their last six games. Guard Ben Hammond has been a bright spot, scoring 16 or more points in four of his last seven outings. He leads the team at 18.4 points per game in that stretch. The matchup inside will be critical. Reneau’s versatility and scoring prowess will test a Virginia Tech frontcourt that allowed Florida State to shoot 54% from the field. Hokies forward Tobi Lawal, who had 16 points and seven rebounds against the Seminoles, will be tasked with helping contain him. Miami’s balanced attack, which also features Shelton Henderson (17 points, nine rebounds vs. NC State) and guard Tre Donaldson, presents a challenge for a Virginia Tech defense that has allowed 80 or more points in three of its last five losses. The Hurricanes won the season’s first meeting, 81-73, in Blacksburg on Jan. 3. Since that game, Miami has solidified itself as a conference contender, while the Hokies are in need of a quadrant-one victory to bolster their NCAA Tournament prospects. Tuesday’s contest tips off at 7 p.m. EST and will be broadcast on the ACC Network. For Miami, it’s a chance to solidify its standing; for Virginia Tech, an opportunity to change its trajectory.
