Undefeated Miami (Ohio) Visits Massachusetts in MAC Showdown HADLEY, Mass. (Interstat) — The undefeated and nationally ranked Miami (Ohio) RedHawks put their perfect record on the line Tuesday night in a Mid-American Conference men’s basketball rematch against the Massachusetts Minutemen at the Mullins Center. The RedHawks (25-0, 12-0 MAC), one of only two remaining unbeaten teams in Division I, arrive having dominated conference play. They escaped with an 86-84 home victory over UMass just three weeks ago on Jan. 27, a game that represents the Minutemen’s closest call against Miami this season. Massachusetts (15-11, 7-5) seeks to play spoiler and bolster its conference standing, but faces a monumental task. The Minutemen have lost two of their last three, including a 99-92 road loss at Akron last Friday. In that game, Danny Carbuccia led UMass with 13 points and nine assists. The junior guard has been a consistent facilitator, dishing out 17 assists in a win over Central Michigan on Feb. 3 and averaging 7.4 assists over his last seven contests. Miami, however, is powered by a deep and efficient offense. Star forward Brant Byers is coming off a 21-point, three-block performance in a 90-74 win over Ohio last Friday. In the Jan. 27 meeting with UMass, Byers contributed 12 points. He is supported by a strong lineup including Peter Suder, who added 20 points against Ohio. The RedHawks’ path to 25-0 has included several tight conference wins, including a 73-71 victory at Buffalo and an overtime triumph at Kent State. Their average margin of victory in MAC play is 11.8 points. For UMass, containing Miami’s offensive balance is paramount. Alongside Carbuccia, Leonardo Bettiol (18 points vs. Akron) and Marcus Banks provide scoring punch. The Minutemen will need a sharp defensive effort to improve upon their January performance, where they allowed Miami to shoot 50% from the field. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. EST. The game is a crucial opportunity for Massachusetts to secure a signature win, while Miami aims to continue its historic run toward an unbeaten regular season.
