SAN ANTONIO (Interstat) — Two Southland Conference men’s basketball teams seeking momentum will meet Monday when the New Orleans Privateers visit the Incarnate Word Cardinals at McDermott Convocation Center. Both teams enter on the heels of narrow weekend losses. New Orleans (12-15) fell 61-60 at Houston Christian on Saturday, while Incarnate Word (10-16) dropped a 91-83 home decision to Nicholls State. The matchup is a quick rematch of a Dec. 8 meeting, which New Orleans won 84-83 in New Orleans. A key player to watch for the Privateers is Churchill Abass, who is coming off an 18-point performance in the loss to Houston Christian. Over his last eight games, Abass has shown consistent scoring ability, including three games of 20 or more points. His presence in the paint will be a focal point for New Orleans’ offense. The Cardinals will counter with guard Jordan Pyke, who is averaging 17.1 points per game over his last seven contests. Pyke is coming off a strong 24-point, 7-rebound effort against Nicholls State and had a 33-point outburst against Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Jan. 31. His scoring will be crucial for a UIW team that has lost four of its last five. New Orleans has shown resilience, winning four of its last seven games, including an overtime victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Feb. 9. Incarnate Word’s recent struggles have been marked by defensive challenges, allowing an average of 84.2 points in its last five losses. The game will tip off at 7 p.m. CST Monday as both teams jockey for position in the Southland standings ahead of the conference tournament.
