JACKSON, Miss. (Interstat) — A surging Bethune-Cookman squad looks to rebound from a narrow defeat when it visits a Jackson State team riding a wave of momentum Monday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference men’s basketball clash at the Lee Williams Athletic Center. The Wildcats (13-12, 10-2 SWAC) saw a seven-game winning streak snapped Saturday in a 57-55 loss at Alcorn State. Despite the setback, they remain near the top of the conference standings. The Tigers (8-17, 6-6), meanwhile, are coming off one of their most complete performances of the season, an 80-60 home victory over Florida A&M. This matchup is a rematch of a Jan. 24 meeting in Daytona Beach, Florida, which Bethune-Cookman dominated in an 85-48 rout. Wildcats forward Daniel Rouzan was efficient in that win, scoring 12 points with six rebounds in 22 minutes. Rouzan has been consistently productive, scoring in double figures in eight consecutive games, including a 24-point outing against Alcorn State on Jan. 26. Jackson State will rely heavily on the dynamic play of guard Daeshun Ruffin, who is coming off a spectacular 25-point, nine-rebound, six-assist effort in the win over Florida A&M. Ruffin has been on a scoring tear, averaging 30.2 points over his last five games. However, he was held to 19 points on 6-of-21 shooting in the first meeting with Bethune-Cookman. The Wildcats have found success with balance and defense during their recent run, while the Tigers have leaned on Ruffin’s high-volume offense. Jackson State will need more secondary scoring to support Ruffin this time around. For Bethune-Cookman, re-establishing its defensive intensity after a low-scoring loss will be key. Monday’s contest continues a critical late-season stretch for both teams as they position themselves for the upcoming SWAC tournament.
