DETROIT (Interstat) — A pair of Horizon League men’s basketball teams looking to climb above .500 will meet Sunday when the Detroit Titans host the Youngstown State Penguins at Calihan Hall. The matchup features two teams jockeying for position in the conference standings. Youngstown State (13-12) arrives after an 86-82 road victory at Oakland on Thursday, powered by a trio of high scorers. Detroit (11-13) is also coming off a road win, having edged Wright State 77-74 on Thursday. The Penguins will lean on guard Cris Carroll, who is averaging 20.4 points over his last seven games. He scored 19 points with five assists in the win over Oakland, following a 34-point outburst against Green Bay on Jan. 22. His backcourt play will be central to Youngstown State’s offense. Detroit counters with guard Orlando Lovejoy, who is coming off an 18-point performance against Wright State. Lovejoy has shown scoring punch, including a 24-point game in a win over Northern Kentucky on Jan. 30, but his consistency will be tested against a Penguins team allowing an average of 77.3 points per game. The Titans won the first meeting this season, 73-68, at Youngstown State on Dec. 29. Detroit will aim to secure the regular-season sweep, while the Penguins seek to avenge that loss and improve their road record. Both teams have displayed recent volatility, with each posting a 4-3 record over their last seven games. The contest could hinge on perimeter defense and which supporting cast can provide a decisive contribution behind their star guards. Following this game, Youngstown State hosts Cleveland State on Wednesday. Detroit continues its homestand against Milwaukee next Friday.
