HAMDEN, Conn. (Interstat) — Two teams riding winning streaks and locked in a tie in the standings will meet Sunday when the Merrimack Warriors visit the Quinnipiac Bobcats in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s basketball clash. The game at TD Bank Sports Center features teams with identical 17-9 overall records. Merrimack (8-3 MAAC) has won seven straight games, the latest an 81-56 rout of Marist on Thursday. Quinnipiac (7-4 MAAC) has won three consecutive contests, including a narrow 56-55 victory over Niagara last Saturday. The matchup is a rematch of a Jan. 17 game in which host Merrimack defeated Quinnipiac 83-71. Warriors guard Kevair Kennedy scored 23 points and dished six assists in that win. Kennedy has been instrumental during Merrimack’s surge, averaging 20.6 points and 5.4 assists over his last seven games. He is coming off a 22-point, 7-assist performance against Marist. Quinnipiac will counter with forward Amarri Monroe, who posted a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds in the first meeting. Monroe has been a consistent force, recording double-doubles in three of his last five games, including a 15-point, 11-rebound effort in the win over Niagara. Both teams have found their form in February. Merrimack’s streak includes dominant road wins at Rider (73-47) and Mount Saint Mary’s (87-70). Quinnipiac’s recent run features a key road victory at Fairfield (72-65), where Monroe had 23 points and 13 rebounds. The game pits Merrimack’s high-scoring offense, which has averaged 78.4 points during its streak, against a Quinnipiac defense that has held its last three opponents to 65 points or fewer. Controlling the tempo and the paint, where Monroe operates, will be critical for the Bobcats to avenge their earlier loss and gain ground in the conference race. Sunday’s winner will gain a crucial advantage in the tightly contested MAAC standings as the regular season enters its final weeks.
