FLORENCE, Ala. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum in the final stretch of the regular season will meet Sunday when the Eastern Kentucky Colonels visit the North Alabama Lions in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game. Eastern Kentucky (9-17) enters having lost five of its last seven, including a 75-61 defeat at Lipscomb on Wednesday. North Alabama (7-17) has dropped five straight, most recently an 82-73 home loss to West Georgia on Feb. 11. The Colonels won the season’s first meeting, 88-80, at home on Jan. 8. In that game, Eastern Kentucky’s backcourt controlled the tempo, a factor likely to be pivotal again. A key player to watch is Eastern Kentucky guard MJ Williams, who is coming off a 14-point, five-assist performance at Lipscomb. Over his last seven games, Williams has averaged 14.3 points and 5.7 assists, including a 22-point, seven-assist effort in a win over Stetson and a triple-double (14 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists) at Central Arkansas. North Alabama will counter with high-scoring guard Donte Bacchus. He poured in 26 points in the loss to West Georgia and has averaged over 21 points per game in his last six outings, highlighted by a 23-point, seven-rebound game in a road win at Stetson on Jan. 31. His offensive production will be crucial for a Lions team that has struggled defensively, allowing 91 points in a loss to Austin Peay and 105 in a loss to North Florida this month. Both teams have shown sporadic offensive firepower — Eastern Kentucky scored 100 points in its win over Stetson, while North Alabama has been held under 70 points in three of its last five games. The Colonels’ ability to distribute the ball, led by Williams, against a Lions defense ranked near the bottom of the conference will be a primary storyline. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. EST tip-off at CB&S Bank Arena on the North Alabama campus. Following this contest, Eastern Kentucky will host West Georgia on Wednesday, while North Alabama will host Queens (N.C.) the same night.
