Preview: Stetson Hatters at Florida Gulf Coast Eagles FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — Two ASUN Conference men’s basketball teams looking to build momentum will meet Saturday when the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles host the Stetson Hatters at Alico Arena. The matchup features teams with similar season trajectories. Florida Gulf Coast (11-15, 3-6 ASUN) enters with a slight edge in the standings over Stetson (9-17, 3-6), with both squads coming off home victories Wednesday night. The Eagles defeated North Florida 90-81 behind a strong offensive performance. Junior guard Jordan Ellerbee led the way with 22 points, continuing a consistent scoring stretch. Over his last eight games, Ellerbee has averaged 16.5 points, including 18 points in a win over North Alabama on Jan. 29 and 22 against North Florida. Stetson snapped a two-game skid with a 67-62 win over Jacksonville. The Hatters were paced by junior forward Ethan Copeland, who scored 17 points. Copeland has been a bright spot in conference play, averaging 17.4 points over a recent five-game stretch that included a 25-point effort at North Florida and a 23-point performance at Eastern Kentucky. Both teams have struggled on the road this season. The Hatters are 2-11 away from home, while the Eagles are 3-9 in true road games. This makes protecting home court critical for FGCU in the tightly contested middle of the ASUN standings. The Eagles won the first meeting this season, 78-71, in DeLand on Jan. 3. Ellerbee scored 19 points in that victory, while Copeland was held to 11 points for Stetson. Saturday’s contest will be the second of two regular-season meetings. The teams are scheduled for a rematch at Stetson on Feb. 28. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. EST at Alico Arena on the Florida Gulf Coast University campus.
