SAN ANTONIO (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum in the tightly packed Southland Conference will meet when the Nicholls State Colonels visit the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Saturday at McDermott Convocation Center. Both teams enter the Valentine’s Day matchup with identical 10-15 overall records. The game is a rematch of a Dec. 6 contest, which Nicholls State won 74-67 at home. Nicholls State looks to snap a two-game skid following a 92-72 home loss to Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Monday. Guard Trae English has been a bright spot, scoring 20 points in that defeat and averaging 16 points over his last three games where he saw significant minutes. The Colonels have shown resilience on the road this season, including a 61-58 win at Northwestern State on Feb. 2. Incarnate Word also aims to rebound from a recent loss, falling 74-62 at Southeastern Louisiana on Monday. The Cardinals are led by guard Davion Bailey, who is coming off a 20-point performance and had a spectacular 36-point outing in a 71-69 road win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Feb. 2. Bailey has been a consistent scoring threat, averaging 18.2 points over his last five games. The matchup features two of the conference’s top perimeter scorers in English and Bailey. Containing them will be a key defensive focus for both sides. Nicholls State holds the recent head-to-head advantage, but Incarnate Word will have the home court as both teams jockey for position in the Southland standings with the conference tournament approaching. The Cardinals are 5-4 at home this season, while the Colonels are 3-9 in true road games. Tipoff is set for Saturday afternoon in San Antonio.
