WILMINGTON, N.C. (Interstat) — A surging UNC Wilmington squad, among the nation’s winningest teams, will look to protect its home court against a Hofstra team riding a wave of momentum in a key Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball clash Saturday at Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks (21-4, 10-2 CAA) have established themselves as a conference powerhouse, boasting a .840 winning percentage. They enter on a two-game win streak following a 65-54 victory over Elon on Thursday, led by 15 points from guard Christian May. May has been a consistent scorer, reaching double figures in four of his last six outings. Standing in their way is a Hofstra Pride team (17-9, 9-3) that has won four of its last five, including a gritty 66-62 road win at College of Charleston last time out. The Pride’s recent success has been fueled by the explosive play of German Plotnikov, who erupted for 20 points and three blocks in 40 minutes against Charleston. Plotnikov’s scoring punch, combined with Cruz Davis’s team-high 23 points in that same game, gives Hofstra a potent backcourt. This matchup presents a stark contrast in season trajectories but similar recent form. UNC Wilmington has dominated at home, while Hofstra has proven capable on the road. The Seahawks won the first meeting this season, 78-71, on Jan. 8 in Hempstead. The game will feature a compelling individual matchup between Hofstra’s Plotnikov and UNCW’s May, both serving as offensive catalysts for their teams. Containing Plotnikov’s versatility will be a primary focus for a Seahawks defense that allows just 66.2 points per game in conference play. With the CAA tournament seeding at stake, the Pride aim to avenge their earlier loss and hand the Seahawks just their third home defeat of the season. UNC Wilmington seeks to maintain its hold on first place in the league standings. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. EST on Saturday, Feb. 14.
