DURHAM, N.C. (Interstat) — A pair of Eagles will clash in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matchup Saturday when Coppin State visits North Carolina Central at McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium. Coppin State (4-20, 2-7 MEAC) enters on the heels of one of its best performances of the season, a 65-47 home win over Delaware State on Feb. 7. Hussain Williams led the way with 15 points in that victory, part of a recent surge for the guard. Over his last five games, Williams is averaging 10.4 points, including a 16-point effort in a loss at Norfolk State on Jan. 24. His backcourt play will be critical for a Coppin State squad that has struggled offensively, averaging just 67.2 points per game. North Carolina Central (9-13, 4-5) looks to build momentum after a 72-63 home win over Delaware State on Monday. Khouri Carvey erupted for a season-high 21 points in that contest, showcasing the scoring punch he provides off the bench. The guard’s production has been variable, but his ability to get hot quickly makes him a key player for the hosts. NCCU won the first meeting this season, 88-77 at Coppin State on Jan. 10. The game pits two teams heading in opposite directions within conference play. Coppin State has lost seven of its last nine games overall. North Carolina Central, while inconsistent, has shown resilience at home, going 6-4 in Durham this season. NCCU’s offense, averaging 72.3 points, will test a Coppin State defense that allows a MEAC-worst 81.5 points per game. For Coppin State, replicating its defensive intensity from the Delaware State win, where it forced 18 turnovers and held its opponent to 28.6% shooting, is the blueprint for an upset. For North Carolina Central, establishing control early and leveraging its home court advantage is paramount to staying in the upper half of the conference standings.
