ABILENE, Texas (Interstat) — A Western Athletic Conference rematch with postseason implications is set for Thursday when the Texas-Arlington Mavericks visit the Abilene Christian Wildcats at Moody Coliseum. The Mavericks (14-9) look to complete a regular-season sweep after defeating the Wildcats 82-72 in Arlington on Jan. 10. Texas-Arlington has lost three straight, including an 81-60 defeat at Utah Valley on Saturday, but holds a superior conference and overall record compared to Abilene Christian (10-13), which has dropped six consecutive games. UTA guard Tyran Mason, who scored 20 points in the loss at Utah Valley, will be a focal point. He averaged 17 points in two games last week and scored 10 in the first meeting against ACU. The Wildcats counter with guard Bradyn Hubbard, who is coming off a 16-point performance in a narrow 65-63 loss at California Baptist on Saturday. Hubbard was held to 5 points in the January loss to the Mavericks. Both teams are struggling to find consistency in conference play. The Mavericks’ three-game skid includes two overtime losses. The Wildcats’ losing streak features several close defeats, including the two-point loss at Cal Baptist and a three-point overtime loss to Southern Utah on Jan. 31. Moody Coliseum has provided little home-court advantage for ACU this season, while UTA has been stronger at home than on the road. A win for the Mavericks would solidify their position in the WAC standings, while the Wildcats are in desperate need of a victory to halt their slide and improve their seeding for the upcoming conference tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST on Thursday, Feb. 12.
