Preview: Long Island Sharks at Wagner Seahawks NEW YORK (Interstat) — A surging Long Island men’s basketball team will look to extend its winning streak when it visits struggling Wagner in a Northeast Conference matchup Thursday night at Spiro Sports Center. The Sharks (16-8) have won five of their last six games, including a 61-54 victory over Stonehill on Saturday. They sit near the top of the conference standings. The Seahawks (8-14), meanwhile, have lost seven of their last nine and are coming off an 84-67 road loss to Central Connecticut. Long Island is led by guard Jamal Fuller, who has been a consistent offensive force. He is averaging 17.4 points over his last seven games, including a 23-point, 6-assist performance in a win over Central Connecticut on Jan. 31. In the latest win over Stonehill, Fuller posted 16 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Wagner will counter with guard Eddie Placer, who is capable of explosive scoring. He poured in a season-high 26 points in the loss to Central Connecticut last Saturday. However, his production has been inconsistent, scoring in single digits in three of his last seven outings. The Sharks have dominated recent play with a balanced attack. Alongside Fuller, Malachi Davis (17 points, 7 rebounds vs. Stonehill) and Greg Gordon have provided key contributions during the team’s successful run. Their defense has also been stout, holding opponents to 63 points or fewer in four of the last five wins. Wagner has struggled to find consistency, particularly on offense. Beyond Placer’s recent outburst, the Seahawks have averaged just 68.3 points in their last three losses. They will need a strong defensive effort to slow down Long Island’s momentum. The game is the first of a home-and-home series between the teams this month, with a rematch scheduled at Long Island on Monday.
