JONESBORO, Ark. (Interstat) — A surging Arkansas State looks to continue its climb in the Sun Belt Conference standings when it hosts struggling Louisiana-Monroe in a men’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at Convocation Center. The Red Wolves (15-10) have won two straight, including a dominant 91-54 victory over Bowling Green on Saturday. Arkansas State has found success behind a balanced attack and stout interior defense, led by forward Aly Tounkara. The junior is coming off a double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in the win. Louisiana-Monroe (4-21) enters on a five-game losing streak, with its last win coming at Old Dominion on Feb. 4. The Warhawks fell 73-68 to Ball State last time out despite another high-scoring effort from guard Krystian Lewis. The standout sophomore has averaged 23.4 points over his last five games, including a 28-point, six-assist performance in the victory over the Monarchs. The matchup pits one of the conference’s most potent scorers against one of its top rim protectors. Lewis will be the focal point for a Warhawks offense that has shown flashes but struggles with consistency. Containing him will be a key task for Tounkara and the Red Wolves’ defense, which held its last opponent to 54 points. Arkansas State has been strong at home this season, while ULM has yet to win a road game. The Red Wolves won both meetings last season by an average of 22 points. For the Warhawks, support for Lewis will be critical. Forward Lavell Brodnex is coming off a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double against Ball State. For Arkansas State, guard Christian Harmon provides a secondary scoring punch, averaging 18 points in the last outing. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CST. Arkansas State will host South Alabama on Saturday, while Louisiana-Monroe travels to face Texas State. The teams will meet again in Monroe on Feb. 21.
