KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Interstat) — The Toledo Rockets and Western Michigan Broncos will meet in a Mid-American Conference men’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at University Arena, with both teams looking to halt recent slides. Toledo (12-12) enters at .500 overall but has lost three of its last four, including a narrow 71-73 road defeat at James Madison on Saturday. The Rockets are 5-6 in conference play. Western Michigan (7-14) has lost four of its last five and sits at 2-8 in the MAC. The game features two of the league’s top individual talents. Toledo is led by guard Leroy Blyden, who is averaging 18.8 points over his last eight games. He scored 24 points in the loss at James Madison and poured in 20 in a Jan. 27 defeat at Akron. For the Broncos, forward Jayden Brewer has been a bright spot, scoring 20 points in two of his last four full appearances, including a win over Central Michigan on Jan. 24. In the first meeting this season on Dec. 30, Toledo held off Western Michigan for an 84-79 home victory. The Rockets have won four of the last five matchups in the series. For Toledo, consistency is the key after several close losses. Beyond Blyden, guard Sonny Wilson (20 points at JMU) and forward Austin Parks provide scoring support. Western Michigan, which is 5-5 at home, will need a strong performance from Brewer and guard Trey Lewis, who scored 19 points in the team’s last outing, a 77-61 loss at Texas State. The Broncos rank last in the MAC in scoring defense, allowing 78.2 points per game, which could play into the hands of Toledo’s up-tempo offense. The Rockets average 77.8 points per contest. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST. Toledo visits Bowling Green on Saturday, while Western Michigan travels to face Eastern Michigan.
