PHOENIX (Interstat) — The New Mexico Lobos look to rebound from a heartbreaking loss and solidify their postseason credentials when they visit the Grand Canyon Antelopes in a key nonconference rematch Wednesday night at GCU Arena. New Mexico (18-6) enters having dropped two straight, including a crushing 91-90 home defeat to Boise State last Saturday. The Lobos had won five consecutive games prior to the recent skid. Grand Canyon (14-8) also seeks a bounce-back performance after falling 80-78 at UNLV on Saturday. The matchup features a compelling individual rematch between two of the teams’ top performers. New Mexico guard Luke Haupt is coming off a career-high 30-point effort in the loss to Boise State. He averaged 9.1 points during the Lobos’ five-game win streak that preceded their two losses. For Grand Canyon, forward Nana Owusu-Anane has been a consistent force, scoring in double figures in five of his last seven games, including a 19-point outing at UNLV. The Antelopes will be fueled by revenge after the Lobos handed them an 87-64 defeat in Albuquerque just under a month ago on Jan. 13. In that game, Haupt led New Mexico with 11 points while Owusu-Anane was held to just three points for GCU. New Mexico’s offense, which averages over 80 points per game, will test a Grand Canyon defense that has been stout at home, holding opponents to an average of 66 points in their last three victories in Phoenix. The Lobos have shown vulnerability on the road recently, with their two-game slide beginning with a 20-point loss to Utah State. Grand Canyon has alternated wins and losses over its last six games and will need a more efficient performance from beyond the arc after shooting just 4 of 18 from 3-point range in the first meeting. Protecting home court is critical for the Antelopes’ own postseason aspirations as they navigate the second half of their schedule. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. MST Wednesday at Grand Canyon University Arena.
