Preview: Liberty Looks to Extend Win Streak at New Mexico State LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Interstat) — The surging Liberty Flames, ranked eighth nationally, will put their nine-game winning streak on the line Wednesday night against a New Mexico State Aggies team seeking a signature Conference USA upset. The Flames (20-3, 10-0 CUSA), one of the nation’s hottest teams, travel to the Pan American Center to face the Aggies (11-12, 4-6) in a rematch of a tense Jan. 15 meeting. Liberty escaped with a 73-71 home victory in that contest, a result the Aggies are eager to avenge on their home floor. Liberty’s dominance has been fueled by balance and the stellar play of forward Zach Cleveland. The versatile junior is coming off a historic triple-double — 19 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists — in Saturday’s 79-76 win over Missouri State. Over his last seven games, Cleveland is averaging 11.6 points, 7.4 assists and 5.1 rebounds, serving as the engine for the nation’s eighth-ranked team. New Mexico State, meanwhile, has struggled for consistency but possesses a potent scorer in guard Jemel Jones. He poured in 26 points in a narrow 91-88 overtime loss at UTEP on Saturday and averaged 24 points in two games last week. Jones scored 15 in the first matchup against Liberty. The Aggies will need a strong defensive effort to slow a Liberty offense that has scored 75 or more points in eight of its last nine games. The Flames lead CUSA in scoring margin and field goal percentage defense. New Mexico State has shown flashes at home, including an 80-64 win over Western Kentucky earlier this month, but faces its toughest conference test. Liberty has not lost since Dec. 29. Wednesday’s game tips off at 9 p.m. EST and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
