KENT, Ohio (Interstat) — A rematch of one of the season’s most thrilling contests awaits Wednesday night when Kent State hosts Eastern Michigan in a Mid-American Conference men’s basketball clash at the Memorial Athletics Center. The Golden Flashes (17-7, 8-3 MAC) edged the Eagles (9-14, 4-7) 76-75 in double-overtime just over two weeks ago in Ypsilanti. That Jan. 24 meeting saw Eastern Michigan’s Mohammad Habhab log 47 minutes and post 22 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks, while Kent State’s Delrecco Gillespie countered with 13 points and 12 rebounds in 47 minutes. Both standout forwards enter the rematch in strong form. Habhab is coming off a 14-point, 12-rebound, six-assist effort in a 65-60 loss at Appalachian State last Saturday, his third double-double in the last seven games. Gillespie nearly had a double-double himself in Kent State’s last outing, scoring 15 points with nine rebounds in a narrow 66-65 defeat at Southern Mississippi. The teams, however, are trending in opposite directions. Eastern Michigan has lost six straight games since its Jan. 13 win over Northern Illinois, including four defeats by six points or fewer. Kent State, despite the recent road loss, has won seven of its last 10 and remains in contention near the top of the MAC standings. Kent State’s home court has been a fortress this season, boasting a 10-2 record. The Golden Flashes’ balanced attack, which also features consistent contributors like Cian Medley and Rob Whaley, will test an Eastern Michigan defense that allowed 100 points in a lopsided loss at Central Michigan during its current skid. For the Eagles to snap their streak and avenge the earlier heartbreaker, they will need another monumental effort from Habhab and improved production from supporting players like Addison Patterson and Jon Sanders, who combined for 26 points in the first meeting. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST Wednesday. Kent State visits Ball State next on Saturday, while Eastern Michigan returns home to host Western Michigan.
