JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Interstat) — A tight Southern Conference race brings a quick rematch to the mountains Wednesday night as the East Tennessee State Buccaneers host the Chattanooga Mocs at ETSU Athletic Center. The Buccaneers (18-7, 8-2 SoCon), riding a four-game winning streak, sit near the top of the league standings and will look to complete a regular-season sweep of their in-state rival. ETSU edged the Mocs 67-66 in Chattanooga on Jan. 21, a game decided by a single point. Chattanooga (10-15, 4-6) arrives seeking to snap a two-game skid and reignite its season. The Mocs are coming off a 78-71 home loss to The Citadel on Saturday despite a 24-point effort from guard Jordan Frison. Frison has been a consistent bright spot, averaging 16.1 points over his last eight games, including a 19-point performance in a win at Western Carolina last month. ETSU counters with forward Blake Barkley, who is coming off a dominant 22-point, 12-rebound double-double in an 87-70 road win at VMI. Barkley, who scored 10 points in the first meeting with Chattanooga, has averaged 17.1 points over the same eight-game stretch. The Buccaneers have found success with balance. In the win at VMI, Cam Morris added 16 points and Maki Johnson had 15. ETSU’s defense, which allows a conference-low 67.2 points per game in league play, will aim to contain Frison and a Chattanooga offense that has been held under 72 points in four of its last five outings. For the Mocs, replicating their Jan. 17 road victory at Western Carolina, where they scored 90 points, will be the blueprint. Beyond Frison, production from players like Tate Darner (9 points, 7 rebounds vs. Citadel) and Brennan Watkins (15 points vs. Citadel) will be crucial. The matchup pits ETSU’s stout defense and conference title aspirations against a Chattanooga team desperate for a signature road win to improve its seeding for the upcoming SoCon tournament. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST Wednesday.
