STATESBORO, Ga. (Interstat) — A surging Appalachian State team looks to extend its winning streak when it visits a struggling Georgia Southern squad in a key Sun Belt Conference men’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at Hanner Fieldhouse. The Mountaineers (17-9) have won seven of their last eight games, including a 65-60 victory over Eastern Michigan last Saturday. They sit in strong position in the conference standings and have found their rhythm on both ends of the floor. Appalachian State is powered by guard Alonzo Dodd, who is playing at an elite level. Over his last eight games, Dodd is averaging 15.4 points and 6.1 assists, including a 23-point, 5-assist performance in the most recent win. His backcourt leadership has been the catalyst for the team’s offensive efficiency during this stretch. The Eagles (14-11), meanwhile, have lost four of their last five, most recently falling 77-71 to Texas State. They will lean on guard Khayri Dunn, who scored 20 points in that loss, to provide a scoring spark. Dunn’s production has been inconsistent, however, and Georgia Southern will need a complete performance to slow the Mountaineers’ momentum. The game will be a test of strengths: Appalachian State’s cohesive, defense-first approach against a Georgia Southern team that has shown offensive firepower but has struggled for consistency in conference play. The Eagles’ overtime win over Old Dominion last month shows their potential, but they have been unable to sustain it. This is the first of two regular-season meetings between the rivals, with the rematch scheduled for Feb. 21 in Boone, N.C. The outcome will carry significant weight for Sun Belt tournament seeding. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST Wednesday at Hanner Fieldhouse.
