Preview: San Jose State Spartans at UNLV Runnin’ Rebels LAS VEGAS (Interstat) — Two Mountain West teams heading in opposite directions will meet Tuesday afternoon when the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels host the San Jose State Spartans at the Thomas & Mack Center. UNLV (11-12) looks to build on momentum from a narrow 80-78 victory over Grand Canyon last Saturday. The Spartans (6-17), meanwhile, aim to snap a seven-game losing streak, their latest a 65-57 defeat at Colorado State on Feb. 7. The matchup features two of the conference’s top scoring guards. San Jose State will lean on junior Colby Garland, who is averaging 16.3 points over his last four games. He scored 21 points in 40 minutes in the loss to Colorado State. UNLV counters with dynamic sophomore Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn, who is coming off a 29-point performance against Grand Canyon. In his last six games, Gibbs-Lawhorn is averaging 24.2 points, including a 33-point outing in a Jan. 13 overtime win over Boise State. He also scored 10 points in UNLV’s 76-62 win at San Jose State on Jan. 17. The Rebels have found success at home this season, while the Spartans have struggled on the road, losing nine of their last ten away from San Jose. For UNLV, consistency remains the challenge. The Rebels have alternated wins and losses over their last five games. A victory Tuesday would mark their first winning streak since early January. San Jose State seeks to improve its offensive output after being held under 65 points in three of its last four contests. Beyond Garland, support from players like Pasha Goodarzi, who had 15 points against Colorado State, will be crucial. Tuesday’s game is the second of two regular-season meetings. Following this contest, UNLV travels to face Boise State on Friday, while San Jose State returns home to host Grand Canyon on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST.
