Preview: Alcorn State Braves at Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils AVALON, Miss. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking a rare conference victory will meet Monday when the Alcorn State Braves visit the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils in a Southwestern Athletic Conference men’s basketball game. The matchup at the LeFlore County Civic Center features struggling squads. Alcorn State enters with a 4-18 overall record. Mississippi Valley State sits at 1-22. Both teams are coming off losses this past Saturday. The Braves fell 84-77 at Arkansas-Pine Bluff despite 18 points from guard Davian Williams. Williams has been a key offensive contributor, scoring in double figures in four of his last eight games, including a season-high 18 points in the most recent outing. The Delta Devils lost 97-81 to Jackson State, though guard Michael James delivered a standout 32-point, four-assist performance. James has been a consistent bright spot for Valley, scoring 23 or more points in four of his last five contests, including a 31-point effort against Bethune-Cookman on Jan. 17. While both defenses have had difficulties this season, the game may hinge on which supporting cast can provide scoring beyond the primary threats. For Alcorn State, Tycen McDaniels (12 points vs. UAPB) and Nick Woodard (11 points vs. UAPB) offered secondary scoring last time out. For Mississippi Valley State, Daniel Mayfield erupted for 30 points in the loss to Jackson State. The teams will meet again in Lorman, Mississippi, on March 3. But Monday’s contest offers an immediate opportunity for either program to build momentum during a challenging season. Tip-off is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 9, 2026.
