RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) — A surging California Baptist will look to extend its winning streak and avenge an earlier overtime loss when it hosts a struggling Tarleton State in a Western Athletic Conference men’s basketball matchup Thursday. The Lancers (16-6, 6-3 WAC) have won six consecutive games, most recently an 87-77 overtime victory at Texas-Arlington on Jan. 31. They are powered by guard Dominique Daniels, who is averaging 25.2 points over his last five games. Daniels scored 47 points in a win over Utah Valley on Jan. 24 and posted 28 points, five rebounds and six assists in the win over UTA. The Texans (11-11, 3-7), meanwhile, have lost seven straight games since their last victory, which came against these same Lancers. Tarleton State edged California Baptist 81-76 in overtime in Stephenville, Texas, on Jan. 3. Guard Camron McDowell, a key player for the Texans, is averaging 17.4 points per game during the losing skid, including a 25-point performance at Utah Tech on Jan. 17. California Baptist has found its form since that early-January defeat, climbing the WAC standings with a potent offense. Tarleton State’s defense, which has allowed an average of 75.1 points during its seven-game slide, will be tested by Daniels and a Lancers squad averaging 74.3 points per game in conference play. The game will be played at the CBU Events Center, where the Lancers are 10-2 this season. For Tarleton State, stopping the streak will require recapturing the defensive intensity that fueled their first meeting, while also finding consistent scoring beyond McDowell. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST. The Lancers will host Abilene Christian on Saturday, while the Texans travel to face Southern Utah.
