RICHMOND, Ky. (Interstat) — Two ASUN Conference men’s basketball teams looking to build on rare recent wins will meet Thursday when the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles visit the Eastern Kentucky Colonels at McBrayer Arena. The Eagles (10-13) enter with modest momentum after a 68-49 road victory at Jacksonville on Saturday, which snapped a two-game skid. The Colonels (7-16) seek to halt a four-game losing streak, most recently an 81-90 defeat at Central Arkansas. Florida Gulf Coast has found a rhythm offensively in its wins, averaging 77 points in its last three victories. Guard Jordan Ellerbee has been pivotal, averaging 16.3 points over his last four games. He scored 15 points with five rebounds in the win at Jacksonville. Eastern Kentucky’s struggles are reflected in a 1-7 record since Jan. 15, though several losses have been narrow, including an overtime defeat at Jacksonville and a two-point loss at Austin Peay. The Colonels will lean on the versatile play of MJ Williams, who is coming off a near triple-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists against Central Arkansas. The matchup features two of the lower-tier teams in the ASUN standings, making it a critical opportunity for either to gain ground. Florida Gulf Coast won last season’s lone meeting, 78-71, in Fort Myers. Following this contest, Florida Gulf Coast travels to face Bellarmine on Saturday. Eastern Kentucky remains at home to host Stetson the same day.
