WILMINGTON, N.C. (Interstat) — A Colonial Athletic Association rematch with first-place implications is set for Thursday when the UNC Wilmington Seahawks host the William & Mary Tribe at Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks (19-3, 7-2 CAA), who sit atop the conference standings, will be looking to avenge a 77-70 loss at William & Mary on Jan. 22. Since that defeat, UNC Wilmington has won three straight, including an 82-73 road victory at Towson last Thursday. Guard Greedy Williams has been a steady force, averaging 13.5 points and 6.8 assists over the last six games, including a 14-point, 7-assist performance in the win over Towson. William & Mary (14-8, 5-4) arrives after a high-scoring 104-96 home loss to Campbell on Saturday, which snapped a brief two-game win streak. The Tribe’s recent success has been fueled by forward Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi, who is coming off an 18-point, 4-rebound effort against Campbell. In the Jan. 22 win over these same Seahawks, Vahlberg Fasasi contributed 4 points and a block. The matchup pits one of the conference’s most potent offenses against its stingiest defense. William & Mary averages a CAA-best 82.1 points per game but has lost three of its last five. UNC Wilmington leads the conference in scoring defense, allowing just 68.2 points per contest. The Seahawks’ three losses this season have come by a combined 15 points. A key battle will be in the backcourt, where Williams’ playmaking for UNCW will be challenged by a William & Mary team that forces over 13 turnovers per game. The Tribe’s ability to control the tempo and score in transition will be critical against a disciplined Seahawks unit. With the CAA tournament seeding taking shape, this contest carries significant weight. A win would solidify UNC Wilmington’s hold on first place, while William & Mary seeks a crucial road victory to climb back into the upper tier of the conference. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff on Thursday, Feb. 5.
