SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (Interstat) — A hot-shooting rematch is on tap Thursday when Cal State Northridge visits Cal Poly in a Big West Conference men’s basketball clash at Mott Gym. The Matadors (13-10, 6-4 Big West) enter having won three of their last four, including a decisive 81-64 victory over UC San Diego last Saturday. They will look to complete a regular-season sweep of the Mustangs (9-14, 4-6), having held off Cal Poly 95-90 in Northridge on Jan. 8. That first meeting set a high-scoring precedent, a trend that could continue. Cal State Northridge averages 80.2 points per game in conference play, while Cal Poly has found its offensive rhythm lately, posting 94 points in a win at UC Riverside last time out. The matchup features two of the league’s premier scorers. Northridge is powered by Mahmoud Fofana, who is averaging 18.4 points over his last five games. The guard dropped 22 points in each of his last two outings and scored 16 in the first win over Cal Poly. He will be countered by Cal Poly’s dynamic guard Hamad Mousa, who torched the Matadors for 34 points in the January loss. Mousa is coming off a 26-point, 4-assist performance at UC Riverside and has scored 20 or more in four of his last seven games. The Mustangs have shown resilience, bouncing back from a four-game skid with consecutive road wins at Cal State Bakersfield and UC Riverside. Protecting home court is critical for their conference standing, as they sit two games below .500 in league play. For the Matadors, maintaining momentum is key as they jockey for position in the upper half of the Big West. Point guard Josiah Davis, who recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists against UC San Diego, facilitates an offense that has topped 80 points in four of its last five wins. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. PST Thursday at Robert Mott Gymnasium on the Cal Poly campus.
