Preview: Mount Saint Mary’s at Saint Peter’s JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Interstat) — A quick rematch with postseason implications in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference unfolds Friday night when the Saint Peter’s Peacocks host the Mount Saint Mary’s Mountaineers at Yanitelli Center. The teams met just three weeks ago on Jan. 9 in Emmitsburg, Md., with the Mountaineers (9-13, 4-5 MAAC) securing a 70-65 victory. That result will be fresh in the minds of the Peacocks (11-7, 6-3), who sit in a stronger position in the league standings but are looking to avenge that home-and-home series opener. Saint Peter’s enters having dropped its last outing, 67-59 at Merrimack on Saturday. The Peacocks will lean on forward Lucas Scroggins, who recorded a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds in that loss. Scroggins has been a consistent interior force, averaging a double-double over his last three games. His defensive presence, with multiple blocks in four of his last five contests, will be key against a Mountaineers backcourt that thrives on penetration. Mount Saint Mary’s arrives with momentum after a 71-61 home win over Rider last Saturday. The Mountaineers are led by guard Xavier Lipscomb, who erupted for 20 points in that victory. Lipscomb was instrumental in the first matchup against Saint Peter’s, scoring 18 points and dishing five assists. His playmaking and scoring bursts are central to the Mountaineers’ offense. Despite their sub-.500 overall record, the Mountaineers have shown they can compete in the MAAC, having won three of their last five conference games. The Peacocks, however, have been strong at home in Jersey City, boasting a 7-2 record at Yanitelli Center this season. The matchup pits Saint Peter’s defensive strength, allowing just 65.2 points per game, against a Mount Saint Mary’s team that has found its offensive rhythm in recent wins. Containing Lipscomb and mitigating Scroggins’ impact on both ends will be the critical battles. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST on Friday, Jan. 30.
