EAST LANSING, Mich. (Interstat) — A battle for Big Ten supremacy and potentially the nation’s top ranking will unfold Friday when Michigan State hosts Michigan in a monumental in-state rivalry clash at the Breslin Center. Both teams enter with sterling records. The visiting Wolverines (19-1, 8-1 Big Ten) have won eight of their last nine, their lone loss a 91-88 setback to Wisconsin on Jan. 10. The Spartans (19-2, 9-1), riding a seven-game win streak, sit atop the conference standings. Their only losses came at Nebraska (58-56) on Jan. 2 and to a non-conference opponent. The spotlight will shine on a marquee point guard matchup. Michigan State’s Jeremy Fears is playing at an elite level, averaging 22.3 points and 9.3 assists over his last three games. He erupted for 29 points and nine assists in Tuesday’s 88-79 overtime win at Rutgers. For Michigan, forward Morez Johnson provides consistent scoring, averaging 13.1 points per game. He led the Wolverines with 17 points in their 75-72 victory over Nebraska on Tuesday. The rivalry adds intensity to an already high-stakes contest. Michigan’s high-powered offense, which has scored 80 or more points in 12 games, will test a stout Michigan State defense that has held its last four opponents under 68 points. Friday’s winner gains a crucial edge in the conference race and a strong case for the spot in next week’s AP Top 25. Tipoff is set for 9 p.m. EST. The game will be televised on Fox.
