Preview: Saint Joseph’s Hawks at Loyola Chicago Ramblers CHICAGO (Interstat) — A surging Saint Joseph’s squad looks to continue its climb in the Atlantic 10 standings when it visits struggling Loyola Chicago on Tuesday night at Joseph Gentile Center. The Hawks (12-8, 5-2 A-10) have won four of their last five conference games, most recently an 81-74 victory over Dayton on Saturday. They are powered by guard Derek Simpson, who is playing at an all-conference level. Over his last seven games, Simpson is averaging 18.1 points, 6.1 assists and 4.7 rebounds per contest. He nearly posted a triple-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds at Richmond on Jan. 11 and dished 11 assists in a win over Duquesne. In the win over Dayton, Simpson had 20 points and nine assists, while teammates Dasear Haskins and Jaiden Glover each added 20 points. Conversely, the Ramblers (5-16, 1-7) are mired in a difficult season, having lost seven of their last eight games. Their lone A-10 win came at Rhode Island on New Year’s Eve. Loyola’s recent struggles continued with a 71-59 home loss to Duquesne on Saturday. A bright spot has been forward Miles Rubin, who provides defensive presence and occasional scoring bursts. Rubin recorded a double-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks at George Washington on Jan. 10 and had 14 points in a loss to Dayton earlier this month. The matchup pits one of the league’s most efficient offenses against one of its most vulnerable defenses. Saint Joseph’s has scored 80 or more points in three of its last five games. Loyola Chicago has allowed 78 or more points in six of its eight conference losses this season. Containing Simpson will be the primary challenge for a Ramblers team seeking to protect its home floor and snap a three-game skid. Tuesday’s game is the first of two scheduled meetings between the programs this season. They are slated to meet again in Philadelphia on Feb. 21. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. EST.
