Preview of Tuesday’s Mid-American Conference Men’s Basketball Game OXFORD, Ohio (Interstat) — The nation’s last remaining undefeated team will put its perfect record on the line Tuesday when the No. 1-ranked Miami (Ohio) Redhawks host the Massachusetts Minutemen in a Mid-American Conference clash at Millett Hall. Miami (Ohio) (20-0, 7-0 MAC) has navigated a gauntlet of close conference calls, winning its last three games by a combined 14 points, including two in overtime. The Redhawks are coming off a 107-101 overtime victory at Kent State last Tuesday, led by a 27-point, eight-assist performance from star guard Peter Suder. Suder has been instrumental in the perfect start, averaging 21.1 points and 6.2 assists over his last seven games. His backcourt mate, Eian Elmer, is also a potent scorer, coming off a 25-point outing against Kent State. They will face a UMass (13-8, 5-3) team riding a two-game winning streak, including a 68-67 road win at Buffalo last Friday. The Minutemen are led by guard Leonardo Bettiol, who is averaging 18.1 points per game in conference play. Bettiol has scored 20 or more points in four of his last six contests, including a 32-point, 14-rebound effort in a narrow overtime loss to Bowling Green on Jan. 3. The matchup pits the conference’s premier offense against a streaking challenger. Miami leads the MAC in scoring, averaging 91.2 points per game, and has eclipsed 100 points six times this season. UMass has shown it can keep pace in high-scoring affairs, averaging 80.6 points, but its defense, allowing 76.9 per game, will be severely tested. The Redhawks have won their home games by an average of 24.6 points this season. A victory would extend the best start in program history and keep them firmly in control of the MAC race. For UMass, a road upset would represent a signature win for its postseason resume and shake up the conference standings. The teams are scheduled to meet again in Amherst on Feb. 17. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. EST.
