Preview: Alabama State at Texas Southern HOUSTON (Interstat) — Two men’s NCAA Division I teams looking to build on rare wins will meet Tuesday when the Alabama State Hornets visit the Texas Southern Tigers. Both squads enter the Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup with struggling overall records. Alabama State (6-12) snapped a three-game skid with a 95-80 road victory at Prairie View on Saturday. Texas Southern (5-13) ended a two-game losing streak the same day with an 89-74 home win over Alabama A&M. The game will feature a clash of recent standout performers. Alabama State guard Micah Simpson is coming off a 23-point, four-assist effort in the win at Prairie View. Over his last six games, Simpson is averaging 15.8 points and 4.7 assists, including a 25-point outing in a win at Mississippi Valley State on Jan. 3. For Texas Southern, guard Jaylen Wysinger erupted for a season-high 23 points, adding four rebounds and three assists, in the Tigers’ victory over Alabama A&M. His performance marked a dramatic resurgence after playing a combined eight minutes over the previous two contests. In Alabama State’s win Saturday, Simpson was joined by Asjon Anderson (19 points, six assists) and Jerquarius Stanback (13 points) as key contributors. Texas Southern’s win was powered by Wysinger, Alex Anderson (16 points, five rebounds, five assists) and Troy Hupstead (17 points, six rebounds, two blocks). Both teams have faced challenging non-conference slates. Alabama State’s losses include road games at Cincinnati, Missouri and New Mexico. Texas Southern has fallen at North Carolina State, Minnesota and Abilene Christian. Tuesday’s contest represents a chance for either team to string together consecutive wins for only the second time this season. Alabama State last won two straight in early January. Texas Southern has not won back-to-back games since late December. Following this game, Alabama State will host Bethune-Cookman on Jan. 31. Texas Southern will travel to face Prairie View on the same date.
