CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Interstat) — A quick rematch with potential Southland Conference implications is set for Monday night when Texas A&M-Corpus Christi hosts Texas-Rio Grande Valley at the American Bank Center. The Islanders (11-9, 4-3 Southland) look to complete a regular-season sweep of their regional rival after edging the Vaqueros 63-59 in Edinburg on Jan. 3. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi enters having won three of its last four, including a 79-71 road victory at Incarnate Word on Saturday. Sheldon Williams led the way in that win, scoring 22 points, and has been a key offensive catalyst. He averaged 16.3 points over his last three games and scored 11 in the first meeting against UTRGV. The Vaqueros (9-11, 4-3) arrive with momentum from a 68-51 road win at Houston Christian on Saturday, their third victory in the last four games. Guard Marvin McGhee, coming off a 17-point performance against Houston Christian, has been central to UTRGV’s recent surge. He averaged 17.7 points over the last three contests after being held to just two points in the loss to the Islanders earlier this month. Both teams are knotted at 4-3 in the conference standings, making this a pivotal matchup in the crowded Southland race. The Islanders have relied on a defense that allows just 64.1 points per game in conference play. The Vaqueros, who have shown improved offensive form lately, will need to solve that defense to avenge the earlier loss. The game tips off at 7:30 p.m. CST. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi holds a 30-22 advantage in the all-time series. Following this game, the Islanders host Houston Christian on Saturday, while the Vaqueros travel to face Incarnate Word.
