NORFOLK, Va. (Interstat) — Two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s basketball teams riding winning streaks will meet Monday night when Norfolk State hosts Morgan State at Echols Hall. The Spartans (10-12, 4-1 MEAC) have won three straight, most recently a 103-76 rout of Coppin State on Saturday. The Bears (7-13, 3-2) have won three of their last four, including a dramatic 78-77 road victory at Howard on Saturday. The matchup features two of the conference’s top offensive talents. Norfolk State is led by Anthony McComb, who is coming off a 29-point, six-assist performance. Over his last three games, the guard is averaging 24.3 points. Morgan State counters with Rob Lawson, who scored 24 points in the win at Howard and is averaging 17.1 points over his last seven contests. He was instrumental in the Bears’ 80-79 win at Delaware State on Jan. 17. While both teams have struggled overall this season, conference play has provided a reset. Norfolk State’s current surge follows a three-game skid in late December. Morgan State, after a difficult non-conference slate, has found rhythm in MEAC action, with its last three wins each coming by three points or fewer. Defense may prove critical. In its lone MEAC loss, Norfolk State scored just 70 points in a home defeat to Maryland-Eastern Shore. Morgan State was held to 49 points in a road loss at UMES earlier this month. The Spartans won both meetings last season. Following this game, Norfolk State travels to Howard on Saturday, while Morgan State visits Coppin State. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. EST Monday.
