HOUSTON (Interstat) — Two Southland Conference men’s basketball teams looking to snap losing streaks will meet Monday night when the Houston Christian Huskies host the Incarnate Word Cardinals at Sharp Gymnasium. The Huskies (7-13, 2-5 Southland) have dropped two straight, most recently a 68-51 home loss to Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Saturday. The Cardinals (9-11, 3-4) have lost three of their last four, including a 79-71 defeat against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday. Incarnate Word won the first meeting this season decisively, 73-56, in San Antonio on Jan. 3. Cardinals guard Tahj Staveskie dominated that contest, scoring 27 points with three rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Staveskie enters Monday’s rematch as the conference’s hottest scorer, averaging 21.1 points in league play. He is coming off a 25-point performance in the loss to Corpus Christi and has scored 20 or more points in five of his last eight games. Houston Christian will counter with guard Demarco Bethea, who leads the team in scoring in Southland action at 11.4 points per game. Bethea had 14 points in the loss to UTRGV and was held to eight points in the first matchup against UIW. Both teams have struggled for consistency in January. The Cardinals’ conference wins have come against Northwestern State, Houston Christian and Southeastern Louisiana, but they have yet to win a Southland road game (0-3). The Huskies’ two league victories were a narrow 82-80 win over Northwestern State and an 81-70 decision against Texas A&M-Commerce, both at home. The game will be a critical mid-conference matchup for positioning ahead of the Southland tournament. Following Monday’s contest, Houston Christian begins a two-game road trip at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas-Rio Grande Valley. Incarnate Word returns home to host Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Jan. 31. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CST Monday at Sharp Gymnasium.
