Preview of Monday’s MEAC Men’s Basketball Matchup ORANGEBURG, S.C. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking to halt extended slides will meet Monday when the Delaware State Hornets visit the South Carolina State Bulldogs in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s basketball game. The matchup at SHM Memorial Center features programs with a combined 9-29 overall record. South Carolina State (4-16) snapped a three-game skid with a 56-50 home win over non-Division I Mid-Atlantic Christian on Tuesday. Delaware State (5-13) enters on a five-game losing streak, most recently falling 80-79 to Morgan State on Jan. 17 after a potential game-winning shot rimmed out at the buzzer. The Hornets have been competitive in conference play, with three of their last four MEAC losses coming by three points or fewer. Guard Ponce James has been a consistent bright spot, averaging 17.2 points over his last five games. He scored 22 in the narrow loss to Morgan State. The Bulldogs have struggled for consistency but have shown flashes in MEAC play, including a 58-57 win over Howard and a 74-72 road victory at Coppin State this month. Forward Christopher Parker is coming off a season-high 13 points in the win over Mid-Atlantic Christian. Both teams rank near the bottom of the conference in scoring offense and defense, suggesting a matchup that could be decided by which squad executes better in the final minutes. Delaware State won both meetings last season. Monday’s game is the only scheduled meeting this regular season between the Hornets and Bulldogs. South Carolina State hosts North Carolina Central next Saturday, while Delaware State is off until hosting Maryland-Eastern Shore on Jan. 31.
