CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — Two American Athletic Conference teams trending in opposite directions will meet Friday night when the Charlotte 49ers host the Tulane Green Wave at Halton Arena. Tulane (12-7) arrives having lost three straight, including a 79-74 defeat at Florida Atlantic on Wednesday. The Green Wave’s recent struggles have followed a strong start to league play. Guard Curtis Williams has been a bright spot, averaging 17.8 points over his last five games. He poured in a season-high 27 points in 38 minutes in the loss to FAU. Charlotte (10-9) has won four of its last five, most recently a 73-70 road victory at East Carolina on Sunday. The 49ers’ surge has been fueled by guard Dezayne Mingo, who is averaging 15.4 points and 6.4 assists over that five-game stretch. He posted 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists against the Pirates. The matchup features a contrast in styles. Tulane will rely on Williams and backcourt mate Rowan Brumbaugh, who scored 14 points Wednesday, to generate offense. Charlotte, which scored 104 points in a double-overtime win over Wichita State earlier this month, boasts a more balanced attack. Center Anton Bonke is coming off a 12-point, eight-rebound performance against East Carolina. Defensive consistency will be key for Tulane to snap its skid. The Green Wave allowed an average of 77.3 points in their three consecutive losses. Charlotte, meanwhile, has found a rhythm, with its only recent setback an 86-74 home loss to Tulsa. Friday’s contest is the only scheduled meeting between the programs this season. Following the game, Tulane returns home to face South Florida on Jan. 28. Charlotte hits the road for a game at Temple on the same date.
