RENO, Nev. (Interstat) — A surging Nevada squad looks to continue its strong Mountain West start when it hosts struggling San Jose State on Tuesday night at Lawlor Events Center. The Wolf Pack (13-5) enter the contest having won three of their last four, including an 81-66 road victory at Air Force on Saturday. They are led by dynamic guard Corey Camper, who is averaging 18.3 points over his last three games. Camper erupted for 31 points in a win over Wyoming on Jan. 10 and followed with 23 against the Falcons. Nevada’s defense, allowing just 69.2 points per game, will be tasked with slowing San Jose State’s primary offensive threat, Melvin Bell. The Spartans’ guard is averaging 16.8 points over his last five contests, including a 22-point effort in a 76-62 loss to UNLV last Saturday. Despite Bell’s consistency, San Jose State (6-12) has lost five of its last six games and seeks its first road win of the conference season. The Spartans’ challenges are compounded by their defensive struggles, having allowed an average of 78.2 points in their six Mountain West games. Containing Camper and a balanced Nevada attack that features Tayshawn Comer (14 points vs. Air Force) and Elijah Price (13 points) will be critical. Historically, Nevada has dominated the series, winning 18 of the last 19 meetings. The Wolf Pack’s combination of efficient scoring and stout defense presents a formidable challenge for a San Jose State team still searching for traction in league play. A key matchup will be on the perimeter, where Bell’s scoring prowess meets Camper’s recent explosive form. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. PST in Reno. Nevada hits the road next to face New Mexico on Saturday, while San Jose State continues its trip at Wyoming on Jan. 24.
