Undefeated Miami (Ohio) Faces Stern Test at Kent State KENT, Ohio (Interstat) — The nation’s only remaining undefeated team in NCAA Division I men’s basketball puts its perfect record on the line Tuesday night in a pivotal Mid-American Conference clash. The Miami (Ohio) Redhawks (19-0, 6-0 MAC), one of college basketball’s most surprising stories, visit the Kent State Golden Flashes (14-4, 5-1) at the Memorial Athletics Center. Miami, off to the best start in program history, is coming off its toughest test of the season, a 105-102 overtime victory over Buffalo on Saturday. The Redhawks have won their six MAC games by an average of 14.2 points, but needed a career-high 37 points from guard Peter Suder to survive against the Bulls. Suder has been a consistent force, averaging 18.1 points per game in conference play. He is complemented by a balanced attack featuring Luke Skaljac and Eian Elmer, who combined for 35 points and 13 assists in the win over Buffalo. Kent State presents the most significant hurdle yet on Miami’s schedule. The Golden Flashes have won five of their last six, including an 87-84 victory over Toledo on Friday. They are led by dynamic guard Delrecco Gillespie, who is averaging 26.3 points over his last four games. He scored 29 against Toledo and had a 32-point outburst in a win over Bowling Green on Jan. 6. The Golden Flashes’ only conference loss was a narrow 87-85 defeat at Central Michigan on Jan. 10. Their non-conference schedule included a 101-60 loss at then-Purdue, providing a high-level benchmark. Kent State’s defense, allowing just 70.8 points per game in MAC play, will aim to disrupt Miami’s efficient offense, which leads the conference in scoring at 88.8 points per game overall. The matchup features a stark contrast in momentum. Miami seeks to continue a historic run, while Kent State aims to hand the Redhawks their first loss and draw even atop the MAC standings. The Golden Flashes have lost only once at home this season. Following this game, Miami hosts Massachusetts on Jan. 27, while Kent State travels to face Eastern Michigan on Jan. 24.
