GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — Two teams riding momentum and locked in a tie in the Southeastern Conference standings will meet Tuesday night when the LSU Tigers visit the Florida Gators at the O’Connell Center. Both teams enter with identical 13-5 overall records. LSU (1-3 SEC) snapped a four-game conference skid with a 78-70 home win over Missouri on Saturday. Florida (3-1 SEC) carries a three-game winning streak, most recently outlasting Vanderbilt 98-94 on the road. The matchup features two of the league’s hottest players. LSU’s surge against Missouri was fueled by guard Marquel Sutton, who scored a season-high 26 points. Over his last three games, Sutton is averaging 18.3 points. He will need another high-output performance to counter Florida’s interior force. Gators forward Rueben Chinyelu has been dominant during Florida’s streak, averaging 18.7 points and 6.3 rebounds over the last three contests. His most impressive outing was a 17-point, 16-rebound effort in a rout of Tennessee on Jan. 10, showcasing his ability to control the paint. LSU’s recent struggles have largely come on the road, where they are 0-3 in SEC play, including losses at Vanderbilt and Texas A&M. The Tigers’ offense, which averages 78.2 points per game, will be tested by a Florida defense that has held its last three SEC opponents to an average of 76.7 points. Florida’s offense has found a rhythm, averaging 95.3 points during its current win streak. Beyond Chinyelu, the Gators have balanced scoring from Thomas Haugh and Xaivian Lee, who each added 20 points against Vanderbilt. The Tigers will look to support Sutton with consistent contributions from Max Mackinnon, who scored 20 against Missouri, and Pablo Tamba. Containing Chinyelu in the post and slowing Florida’s transition game will be critical for LSU to secure its first conference road victory. For Florida, protecting home court is paramount as it navigates a challenging upcoming schedule that includes Auburn and a road trip to South Carolina following this contest.
