SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA SEEKS ROAD WIN AT TEXAS-RIO GRANDE VALLEY EDINBURG, Texas (Interstat) — Two Southland Conference men’s basketball teams looking to halt slides will meet Monday when Texas-Rio Grande Valley hosts Southeastern Louisiana at UT Pan Am Field House. The Vaqueros (6-11) have lost five of their last six, including a narrow 64-63 defeat at Northwestern State on Jan. 12. The Lions (5-13) have dropped three straight and eight of their last nine, most recently falling 68-56 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday. Both teams will lean on their top offensive threats. For UTRGV, junior forward Filip Brankovic has been a consistent scorer, averaging 17.4 points over his last five games. He poured in a season-high 29 points in an 80-67 win over Incarnate Word on Jan. 5. Southeastern Louisiana counters with guard Isaiah Gaines, who is coming off an 18-point performance against New Orleans on Jan. 12 and scored 15 with five rebounds and four blocks against Incarnate Word on Dec. 30. The Vaqueros have shown potency at home this season, averaging 75.2 points in Edinburg compared to 65.6 on the road. Their conference win came at home, the 80-67 victory over Incarnate Word. Southeastern Louisiana’s lone conference win was a 60-52 home decision against Lamar on Jan. 5. The Lions have struggled away from home, posting a 1-8 record in road and neutral-site games. This matchup is the first of two between the programs this season. They will meet again in Hammond, Louisiana, on Feb. 21. UTRGV holds a 7-5 advantage in the all-time series, but the Lions won the last meeting, 73-70, on Feb. 22, 2025. Following this game, the Vaqueros will hit the road to face Houston Christian on Saturday. The Lions return home to host Nicholls State next Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST Monday at the 5,000-seat UT Pan Am Field House.
