HAMPTON, Va. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking to reverse recent slides will meet Monday when Hampton hosts North Carolina A&T in a Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball matchup at the Convocation Center. The Pirates (8-10, 1-4 CAA) have lost three straight, most recently a 74-70 defeat at College of Charleston on Jan. 10. The Aggies (7-9, 0-5) are mired in a five-game losing streak, including a 97-89 loss at William & Mary on Thursday. Both teams have struggled in conference play, making this a pivotal opportunity to gain momentum. Hampton’s defense has kept games close, allowing just 49 points in a narrow loss at UNC Wilmington on Jan. 3. The Pirates will look to guard Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt for offensive spark. He scored 17 points off the bench in the loss to Charleston. North Carolina A&T’s struggles are despite high-level scoring from guard Lewis Walker. He is coming off a career-high 33-point performance in 37 minutes against William & Mary. Over his last five games, Walker is averaging 18.4 points. Support from Zamoku Weluche-Ume (15 points) and Trent Middleton (20 points) in that game offered signs of a capable supporting cast. Hampton holds a slight edge in the season series in recent years, but both programs are under .500 and in the bottom half of the CAA standings. The game will be the first of two regular-season meetings; they are scheduled to play again on Feb. 13 in Inglewood, California. Following this contest, Hampton will host Monmouth on Thursday. North Carolina A&T will travel to face Hofstra on Jan. 22.
