FAIRFAX, Va. (Interstat) — A surging George Mason squad, boasting one of the nation’s most impressive records, will put its 17-1 mark on the line Monday night when it hosts local rival George Washington in an Atlantic 10 Conference clash at EagleBank Arena. The Patriots, whose only loss came at Virginia Tech on Dec. 6, have won 10 consecutive games. They are led by guard Riley Allenspach, who is averaging 18.3 points over his last three contests, including a 23-point performance in Tuesday’s 82-74 win at Loyola Chicago. They face a Revolutionaries team (12-6) looking to rebound from a tough 84-79 home loss to Davidson on Wednesday. George Washington’s hopes will heavily rest on forward Rafael Castro, who has been a dominant force. Castro is averaging 22.2 points and 9.2 rebounds over his last five games, posting double-doubles in three of them. He scored 23 in the loss to Davidson. The Revolutionaries have shown a potent offense, scoring 99 or more points three times this season, but have struggled recently on the road in conference play, including a loss at Dayton on Jan. 6. George Mason has built its record on a balanced attack and stout defense, holding opponents to 61 points or fewer in three of its last five wins. The Patriots won both meetings last season. Monday’s game tips off at 7 p.m. EST and will be a critical early conference test for both teams in this regional rivalry.
