EL PASO, Texas (Interstat) — A surging Middle Tennessee squad looks to continue its climb in the Conference USA standings when it visits struggling UTEP on Thursday night at the Don Haskins Center. The Blue Raiders (9-5, 2-0 CUSA) have won four of their last five games, including a pair of tight conference victories last week. They edged Sam Houston 68-67 on Sunday, following an 88-51 rout of Louisiana Tech. Guard Jahvin Carter has been instrumental, averaging 13.2 points over his last five games. He scored 16 points with four rebounds and four assists in the win over Sam Houston. Conversely, the Miners (4-10, 0-2) are mired in a five-game losing streak, all by double digits except a one-point loss to Norfolk State on Dec. 21. Their last outing was a 76-64 defeat at Florida International on Sunday. Guard Kaseem Watson has been a bright spot, averaging 17.2 points over his last six contests. He poured in a season-high 25 points in the loss to FIU. The matchup pits one of the conference’s early leaders against a team seeking its first league win. Middle Tennessee’s offense, which scored 88 points against Louisiana Tech, will test a UTEP defense that has allowed an average of 73.4 points during its skid. For UTEP, protecting home court is critical to reversing its fortunes. The Miners’ last win was a 76-66 victory over North Dakota State on Dec. 22. They will need a significant defensive effort to contain a balanced Blue Raiders attack that features Carter, Kamari Lands (14 points vs. Sam Houston) and Torey Alston. Middle Tennessee visits New Mexico State on Saturday. UTEP hosts Western Kentucky on Saturday.
