ROCK HILL, S.C. (Interstat) — A surging Charleston Southern team visits Winthrop on Wednesday night in a Big South Conference men’s basketball matchup featuring two of the league’s top performers. The Buccaneers (11-6) enter Winthrop Coliseum having won three straight, including an 86-83 victory over UNC Asheville on Saturday. Charleston Southern has shown potency on the road this season, with notable non-conference wins at Gardner-Webb and Richmond during its current streak. A key to the Buccaneers’ success has been forward Brycen Blaine, who is averaging 14.8 points and 6.6 rebounds over his last five games. He posted 23 points and seven rebounds in the win at Richmond on Dec. 28. The Eagles (9-8) are looking to build momentum after an 88-77 home win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday snapped a two-game skid. Winthrop has been led by the dominant play of forward Logan Duncomb, who is coming off a 31-point, 13-rebound performance in a loss at Longwood on Dec. 31 and scored 21 points in the win over Gardner-Webb. Wednesday’s contest pits Charleston Southern’s balanced attack, which saw A’lahn Sumler (18 points) and Luke Williams (10 points, 6 assists) also shine against UNC Asheville, against a Winthrop squad reliant on Duncomb’s interior scoring. The Eagles have struggled against high-major competition, falling to Texas Tech and Nebraska, but are 7-2 at home this season. Historically, games in this series have been tightly contested. The outcome could hinge on whether Winthrop can find consistent secondary scoring behind Duncomb and if Charleston Southern’s defense can contain him while maintaining its own efficient offense. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Winthrop Coliseum.
