RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — A marquee Atlantic 10 men’s basketball showdown is set for Wednesday afternoon at the Siegel Center as the surging Saint Louis Billikens, owners of the nation’s attention, visit the VCU Rams. Saint Louis (13-1, 1-0 A-10) arrives with one of the most potent offenses in the country, averaging 94.6 points per game during a current nine-game winning streak. Their lone loss came by a single point to Stanford in late November. The Billikens are led by sophomore sensation Robbie Avila, a dynamic guard who orchestrates the attack. Avila is coming off a 20-point, 8-assist performance in a 102-79 league win over Saint Joseph’s on Dec. 31. VCU (11-4, 1-0) presents the first major conference test for Saint Louis on the road. The Rams have won five straight, including a 93-80 victory at Duquesne on Saturday. They are powered by forward Lazar Djokovic, who recorded an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double in that win. Djokovic has scored in double figures in 10 consecutive games, providing a consistent interior force. The matchup pits Saint Louis’s high-octane efficiency against VCU’s trademark defensive pressure. The Billikens have scored 100 or more points in five games this season, while the Rams have held opponents to an average of 68.9 points. This game marks the conference home opener for VCU, which has won eight of its last nine at the Siegel Center. Saint Louis, beginning a tough two-game road swing, will look to prove its lofty record is no fluke against a perennial A-10 contender. The winner will seize early control in the league standings. Following this game, Saint Louis visits La Salle on Saturday, while VCU travels to face George Mason.
