PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) ā The Connecticut Huskies, boasting one of the nationās most dominant records, will put their 14-1 mark on the line Wednesday night against the Providence Friars in a Big East Conference clash at Dunkinā Center. UConn has won seven straight games since its only loss to Arizona in November, including a 73-57 dismantling of then-Marquette on Sunday. The Huskiesā defense has been stifling, holding opponents to an average of 60.1 points during the win streak. A key catalyst has been forward Tarris Reed Jr., who is coming off a 13-point, 9-rebound, 3-assist performance against Marquette. Over his last six games, Reed has averaged 12.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.8 blocks, providing a consistent interior force. He is complemented by guards Solo Ball and Silas Demary Jr., who combined for 31 points in the win over the Golden Eagles. Providence (8-6) seeks a signature victory to bolster its postseason resume after a roller-coaster nonconference slate. The Friars are coming off a 77-71 road win at Saint Johnās on Saturday, led by forward Jamier Jonesā 15-point, 10-rebound double-double. Jones has scored in double figures in four consecutive games. The Friars will need a similar all-around effort and a stout home-court advantage to challenge the reigning national champions. Providenceās defense, which allowed 113 points in a double-overtime loss at Butler last month, will be severely tested by UConnās balanced and efficient offense. This game marks the first of two regular-season meetings between the rivals. They will meet again in Storrs on Jan. 27. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. EST on Wednesday, Jan. 7.
